Aztl\u00e1n<\/strong>, where herons abound, was the original homeland of Mexicans. The legendary Aztl\u00e1n was the starting point of the pilgrimage of the seven N\u00e1huatl tribes into the valley of Mexico where they settled and founded the Great Tenochtitlan<\/strong>, currently known as Mexico City.<\/p>\n

There are several researchers who support geographically that Aztl\u00e1n was located in the State of Nayarit, in what is now San Felipe Aztat\u00e1n<\/strong>, and the shrine of the province was the scenic island of Mexcaltit\u00e1n<\/strong>. The cruise departing San Blas<\/strong> northwestward starts in Santiago Ixcuintla<\/strong><\/a>, one of the most dynamic agricultural towns in Nayarit, its main square surrounded by gallant buildings that were witness to the rise of tobacco in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.<\/p>\n

Its name speaks of the Mestizo character of the inhabitants, since the name of Santiago comes from the holy apostle patron of New Galicia, while Ixcuintla is from the Aztec xoloitzcuintle dog<\/strong> which originated in these lands. After learning about the Temple of the Lord of the Ascension and visiting the mural of Our Roots<\/strong> and then the City Hall, a visit to the Huichol Center<\/strong> on Revoluci\u00f3n street toward Mexcaltit\u00e1n is highly recommended.<\/p>\n

Mexcaltit\u00e1n is nestled in a vast lake area bathed by the Santiago and San Pedro rivers, and it is distinguished by picturesque tile houses and the tranquility of its narrow streets which during the rainy season are flooded and accessible only by boat, earning it the nickname of \u201cMexican Venice\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Shrimp fishing is the main activity for the island\u2019s inhabitants, who also make unique crafts based on mangle and palm leaf spheres called \u201cbarcinas\u201d in which dried shrimps are preserved.<\/p>\n

Be sure to visit the \u201cOrigin Museum”<\/strong> where archeological pieces of Mesoamerican cultures are exhibited. You can either eat at \u00a0\u201cLa Alberca\u201d or \u201cKika\u201d restaurants, located on a small islet off Mexcaltit\u00e1n,\u00a0and also try typical prehispanic mexcalteca food: the taxtihuil (shrimp dish made with mole), \u201cCucaracha\u201d shrimp (an original recipe of the island), shrimp p\u00e2t\u00e9, shrimp omelets and tossed fish.<\/p>\n
