The Lovely Blue-Footed Booby

One of the most distinguished inhabitants of the Mexican Pacific Coast is the cheerful and adorable blue-footed booby. Let’s learn more about this curious friend!

If you visit Isabel Island National Park, you will find one of the most beautiful and amazing bird species in the world, its scientific name is Sula nebouxii but the Spaniards named it after its showy feet and apparently goofy movements.

However, it is one of the cleverest birds to hunt for food, which is mainly fish. Their organisms cannot fully synthesize fish carotenoids included in their diet, which act as  antioxidants and stimulants for the blue-footed booby’s immune function, suggesting that carotenoid-pigmentation is an indicator of an individual’s immunological state.

Their curious feet are striking not only for us, this is their best strategy for mating, since females are more attracted to males with deeper blue colored feet, symbol of good health and also, they make a hilarious courtship dance.

These lovely animals captivated Charles Darwin when he saw them for the first time in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, who devoted himself to study them carefully, along with their cousin the red-footed booby bird, and the elegant frigate.
